If your Glow Worm combi boiler has stopped working, it’s easy to try to restart it yourself. To restart the boiler, press the reset button. If the boiler fails to resume normal operation and all external controls are calling for heat, then call your Installation/Servicing company or Glow Worm service.
Combination and system boilers and your heating system work under pressure. If the pressure drops below a certain level the boiler will not fire up. They require a minimum pressure to work properly, so it’s a good idea to check out there are no small leaks in your home’s system. These might not be visible to the homeowner, so it’s a good idea to ask one of our engineers to show you! If you’re unsure how to repressurise your Glow Worm combi boiler, we can do this for you easily.

Potential reasons why there is no heating or hot water in your home can include, failure of a motorised valve, broken diaphragms and airlocks, issues with low water levels, or the system’s thermostat. You will also have to check the temperature is set high enough to heat the water.
You should have a quick glance at the pressure valve of your Glow Worm combi boiler. This should read at about 1bar. If it is less than this, then there is an issue with the pressure of the inlet water to the boiler. Most boilers have a pressure relief valve, which will allow the pressure to rise to about 3.0 – 4.0bar before shutting down the boiler as a safety feature fitted on all boilers.
One of the easiest ways of avoiding possible expensive repairs is to arrange to have your Glow Worm combi boiler serviced by one of our Gas Safe Registered engineers. If your Glow Worm combi boiler is in the guarantee period, you must arrange to book an annual service, otherwise your guarantee will be invalidated. With a service, you will ensure that your boiler is running as well as possible and avoid some nasty surprises should your boiler be out of the guarantee period or you don’t get the mandatory annual service required.
If the weather is freezing, then one of the most common issues for a boiler not to be working as it should could be that the condensate pipe maybe frozen. The homeowner can thaw this out quite easily, but if you’re unsure or just don’t want to touch it, we can do this for you when we visit your home.
To do this find the condensate pipe (this plastic pipe will lead outside and will come out of the wall positioned low down, right above a drain) You can locate the blockage and then place a hot water bottle on top of the pipe’s shoulder where you suspect the blockage to be. This will thaw out the pipe and you will notice a change in the heating almost immediately, due to the blockage being removed and the boiler now has a place to disperse the water into. Something you must be aware of is to make sure that when you are outside, that there could be a potential risk of slipping over due to the cold weather and the water on the ground.
A good thing in the future to stop this happening will be to install a foam insulation pipe cover. You can also leave the heating on at night which will keep the condensate pipe clear of freezing, and you can also put the thermostat at a higher temperature will reduce all condensate from your boiler, but you need to be aware that your radiators will be piping hot!
If you’re Glow Worm combi boiler is making some strange banging or gurgling sounds it will be possible for the error code to show what is happening. This can be a variety of things ranging from low water pressure or the boiler is kettling which is a cause of being in a hard water area which affects the heat exchanger of the boiler’s system due to deposits calcium and magnesium. Over time, these mineral deposits build up into lime scale, which restricts the flow of water through the heat exchanger. This causes the water in the system to become trapped in the pipe, which will eventually evaporate into steam. This can sound quite scary to the homeowner, but please be assured that all boilers are fitted with safety shut off features if there is any risk of an over pressurised boiler system. Call us now if you’re experiencing this with your boiler in Bristol, Somerset & Gloucestershire.
